FSC®
What is the FSC®?
FSC® stands for Forest Stewardship Council®, which is an internationally certified system of forestry management.
FSC® is a non-profit organisation with members from all over the world, who are dedicated to environmentally-friendly, socially responsible and economically sustainable forestry management; the FSC® was founded after the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1993. The FSC® connects together and treats equally all parties interested in protecting and conserving our forests for years to come. This includes the timber and forestry industry, environmental organisations, trade unions, representatives of civil society and indigenous peoples.
The FSC® is completely transparent and its certified operations are normally inspected on-site once a year by independent officials, whose findings are publicly published.
Certification
FSC® certification is awarded equally worldwide according to the FSC’s® regulations and is standardised according to rules defined and adopted by the FSC® International:
The ecological role of a forest must be conserved. Plant and animal species threatened by extinction are protected. The rights of indigenous peoples and workers are protected.
An FSC® certified forest stands for a cultivated area rather than untouched nature. But it is cultivated in a way that means it is conserved as an intact ecosystem for years to come and therefore meeting the aforementioned strong principles and criteria of the FSC®. For example the forest is self-regenerating, dying and rotting tree trunks are not felled, and that branches and tree tops from felled trees are left in the forest. Because these provide a habitat to many animal and plant species.
